An overview of the C1T, C1TR and C1FR centrifuges, their applications, features and GreenCool™ Technology.
Centrifugation is a fundamental part of many laboratory workflows. From preparing clinical samples to processing microtubes, microplates and larger-volume samples, the centrifuge you choose can influence how efficiently your laboratory handles everyday separation tasks.
For laboratories looking for a combination of performance, flexibility and compact design, Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced the Thermo Scientific™ C Series Centrifuges.
The C Series brings together three configurations C1T, C1TR and C1FR designed for clinical and research applications. Refrigerated models also feature Thermo Scientific™ GreenCool™ Technology, a natural refrigerant cooling system developed with sustainability in mind.

A New Generation of Laboratory Centrifugation
A centrifuge has to do more than simply spin samples.
Laboratories work with different sample types, volumes and protocols, often within the same working day. A centrifuge therefore needs to provide the right combination of performance, capacity, flexibility and ease of use.
The Thermo Scientific C Series was designed around these needs.
Available in ventilated and refrigerated configurations, the C Series combines compact design with application flexibility and advanced features designed for modern laboratory workflows.
The range includes:
- C1T — a ventilated centrifuge for general clinical and research applications
- C1TR — a refrigerated benchtop centrifuge for temperature-sensitive samples
- C1FR — a refrigerated floor-standing centrifuge for temperature-sensitive applications
Together, the C Series gives laboratories the flexibility to choose a centrifugation solution that fits their workflow, application and sample requirements.

Compact Design, Serious Separation Performance
Laboratory space is valuable. But a compact footprint should not mean compromising on centrifugation performance.
The C Series combines a compact design with a broad rotor portfolio and high-speed separation capabilities.
Depending on the model and rotor selected, the C Series offers:
- Fixed-angle RCF of up to 30,279 × g
- Swinging-bucket RCF of up to 3,260 × g
- Fixed-angle capacity of up to 6 × 50 mL
- Swinging-bucket capacity of up to 4 × 145 mL
- Up to 13 rotor options
This flexibility allows the C Series to support workflows ranging from micro-volume processing to larger-volume sample preparation.
The rotor portfolio can accommodate formats including microtubes, conical tubes, blood collection tubes, microplates, PCR strips and spin columns, depending on the selected rotor and adapters.
For laboratories with changing application requirements, that flexibility can be particularly valuable.

Choosing the Right C Series Configuration
Not every laboratory needs the same type of centrifugation.
One of the advantages of the C Series is the ability to choose a configuration based on the requirements of the workflow.
C1T: General-Purpose Centrifugation
The C1T is designed for clinical and research applications where refrigeration is not required.
It provides fixed-angle RCF up to 24,328 × g, with a maximum speed of 16,000 rpm and capacity of up to 6 × 50 mL with fixed-angle rotors.
C1TR: Refrigerated Benchtop Centrifugation
The C1TR is designed for workflows involving temperature-sensitive samples.
It provides refrigerated operation from −10°C to 40°C, with fixed-angle RCF up to 30,279 × g.
For laboratories that require temperature-controlled centrifugation while retaining a benchtop format, the C1TR provides a compact option.
C1FR: Refrigerated Floor-Standing Centrifugation
The C1FR brings refrigerated centrifugation into a compact floor-standing configuration.
It is designed for clinical and research applications involving temperature-sensitive samples and provides fixed-angle RCF up to 30,279 × g.

GreenCool™ Technology: More Sustainable Refrigerated Centrifugation
For laboratories working with temperature-sensitive samples, refrigeration can be an important part of the centrifugation process.
The refrigerated C1TR and C1FR models introduce Thermo Scientific™ GreenCool™ Technology, which uses R290, a natural hydrocarbon refrigerant.
The natural refrigerant cooling system is designed to comply with upcoming worldwide F-gas regulations, including those from the European Union and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This gives laboratories a refrigeration solution designed with evolving environmental and regulatory requirements in mind.
The refrigerant has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3, while the refrigerated C Series models use up to 15.7% less energy compared with previous models, under the specified test conditions.
The C Series brochure also describes the GreenCool approach as part of a wider sustainability strategy focused on areas including energy efficiency, reduced hazardous materials, reduced waste and extended product life.
The C Series is manufactured at Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Center of Excellence in Osterode am Harz, Germany, a certified zero-waste facility powered by 100% renewable electricity.
It is important to note that GreenCool Technology applies to the refrigerated C1TR and C1FR models.

Performance specifications matter, but so does the experience of using the instrument every day. The C Series incorporates features designed to simplify routine laboratory operation.
Faster Rotor Exchange
The Thermo Scientific™ Auto-Lock™ Rotor Exchange allows users to remove and install compatible rotors without tools.
Rotor exchange can be completed in as little as three seconds, while full chamber access can make cleaning more convenient and help minimize contamination risks.
For laboratories that move between different applications, this means less time spent changing configurations.
Simpler Sample Protection
The Thermo Scientific™ ClickSeal™ Biocontainment Lids are designed for one-handed operation, including glove-friendly use.
Audible and visual closure cues provide additional confirmation that the lid has been properly closed.
Intuitive Controls
The C Series features an LCD interface designed for straightforward operation, with one-touch access to pre-saved protocols.
Selected models can store up to 99 pre-saved protocols, while alphanumeric program naming can help users identify the correct protocol during routine operation.
These details may seem small, but in a busy laboratory, reducing unnecessary steps can make everyday workflows easier to manage.

Built for Clinical and Research Applications
The C Series is designed to support a broad range of laboratory applications. It can process up to 24 × 5/7 mL blood tubes in a swinging-bucket configuration, depending on the selected rotor.
Depending on the rotor configuration, the C Series can accommodate formats such as 50 mL conical tubes, microplates, microtubes and spin columns.
